Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations/Sponsored Research is responsible for maximizing philanthropic support from foundations and corporations as well as appropriate government sources through grants and contracts. Through close collaboration with senior staff members, the Director leads the creation, implementation, and management of a comprehensive development plan that includes:
• Identifying and promoting institutional and academic priorities appropriate for external funding;
• Identifying and expanding the base of potential corporate, foundation or government sources to fund these priorities;
• Leading the cultivation, solicitation and ongoing stewardship of these prospects; and
• Encouraging and supporting a culture of increased grant-writing among faculty.

Responsibilities of the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations/Sponsored Research include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Maintain an in-depth knowledge of College priorities. Research online databases and other resources to identify potential funding opportunities. Work with appropriate senior administrators, faculty and departments to develop and submit highly competitive grant proposals across the College’s range of programs.
• Maintain strong communications and strategic relationships with corporate and foundation prospects and donors and federal agency program officers. Arrange cultivation, solicitation and stewardship visits for key College leadership both at corporate and foundation offices or on-campus site visits.
• Write or oversee the writing of all institutional proposals, budgets, periodic stewardship reports, ancillary materials, briefings, project descriptions, and other relevant correspondence as required.
• Work with the Provost’s Office and with individual faculty members on proposals for research and curriculum development grants. This includes alerting faculty to grant opportunities and potential collaborations, assisting them with proposal and budget preparation, submitting grant applications, monitoring pre- and post-award issues, and tracking and editing narrative and financial stewardship reporting.
• Manage existing grants using internal reporting systems for proposals submitted and stewardship reports due and submitted, maintaining excellent historical records and working with faculty and staff to ensure that each project or program is meeting the expectations of the proposal.
• Serve as the primary administrator of all online proposal and reporting submission portals.
• With the Finance Office, meet with faculty when new awards are issued to review award instrument, relevant federal or state regulations, reporting deadlines, and internal budget and financial reporting requirements.
• Create and assess quantitative goals and objectives for grant activity, with the overall objectives of increasing proposal volume, success rate, institutional impact and dollars raised.
• Supervise the Assistant Director and the Grants Coordinator/Writer. Manage the departmental budget, office workflow, and organizational priorities.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in corporate and foundation fundraising in a college or university setting, including a proven track record in securing six-figure gifts and higher required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Thorough knowledge of public and private funding sources.
• Exceptional writing, editing, communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to synthesize complex material, to translate it into comprehensive and engaging prose, and to communicate clearly and succinctly.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with superior attention to detail in a complex, dynamic, deadline-driven environment.
• Collegial, collaborative and communicative style, with the ability to exercise sound judgment, display sensitivity, tact and diplomacy. High degree of professionalism and accountability.
• Some travel required, and the ability to work evenings and weekends on occasion.
